About the Commission - History

 

·          On October 7, 1992 Georgia became a Member State of UNESCO. The same year was set up a secretariat of National Commission of Georgia for UNESCO and the Commission itself in which the representatives of the fields of education, science, culture and communication were involved. The first Secretary-General of the Commission was Mr. Petre Metreveli.

·          on July 5-8, 1993, the Cultural Days of Georgia were conducted in the UNESCO Headquarters. In 1995 the Cultural Days of Imereti were conducted in the UNESCO Headquarters.

·          In 1994 the Permanent Delegation of Georgia to UNESCO was set up in Paris, France.

·          In 1994, four Georgian monuments of cultural heritage, historical monuments of Mtskheta, Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery and Upper Svaneti were inscribed into the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

·          In July, 1995, the Memorandum on Understanding between the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Georgia was signed during the visit of Director-General of UNESCO, H.E. Mr. Federico Mayor, in Georgia.

·          In 1997, The National Commission of Georgia for UNESCO invited a mission of experts to evaluate the current state of preservation of the cultural monuments located on the territory of Abkhazia. As a result of the mission, the document was issued, which gives the detailed description of the state of preservation of the monuments by July, 1997.

·          In 1999 Georgia became the first state in the region of South Caucasus to be elected as a Member of Executive Board.

·          In 2001 Georgian Polyphonic Singing was proclaimed by UNESCO to be a masterpiece of Intangible World Heritage; “Chakrulo” was inscribed into the Intangible World Heritage List of UNESCO.

 

·          UNESCO was associated with the celebration of the following Georgian anniversaries:

1. Celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Georgian statehood and of Proclamation of Kutaisi as the capital of the Georgian state (September 1995)

2. Celebration of the 130th anniversary of birth of the famous Georgian naive painter Niko Pirosmani (October, 1996)

3. Celebration of the 300th anniversary of Prince Vakhushti Bagrationi (October, 1997)

4. Celebration of the 55th anniversary of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (October, 1997)

5. Celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of Georgia (May, 1998)

6. Celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the eminent Georgian scholar Mr. Arnold Chikobava (October, 1998)

7. Celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Classical Gymnasium of Tbilisi (November 2000)

8. Celebration of the 200th anniversary of the eminent French orientologist Marie-Felicite Brosset (May, 2002)

9. Celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Bagrati Cathedral (September, 2003)

10. Celebration of the 2000 anniversary of Christianity in Georgia (2004)

11. Celebration of the 900th anniversary of founding the architectural complex and cultural center of Gelati Monastery (2006-2007)
